What is a TTRPG?

TTRPG or Tabletop Role Playing Game is a game like Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder, or Daggerheart. They are also sometimes called “pen and paper” role playing games, because traditionally you track all of your information about your character with a kind of character sheet, as opposed to a video game RPG where the game system/computer code stores and updates that information for you. My personal favorite TTRPG is, as you have probably guessed by now, Dungeons and Dragons, which is why I want to share my hobby with you! Instead of being bound by the traditional walls of most RPGs (the hedge that you are clearly jumping higher than, but you can’t pass over it), TTRPGs like Dungeons and Dragons put literally everything up to your imagination… and a roll of the dice!

Several white polyhedral dice with black numbers spilling over the edge of a wooden surface, with a blurred background.

A tabletop with several tarot cards, some showing ancient illustrations and names of zodiac signs, along with colorful polyhedral dice used in tabletop gaming, including a green twenty-sided die, white dice with red and black numbers, and scattered cards and dice on the table.

Meet the inspiration: Aerthan Yonwood!

In the throes of Covid, I finally signed up to play my first Dungeons and Dragons campaign. It took me several weeks, and several communications to finally get to the point where I was drawing up a character and writing a backstory 4 pages too long… but Aerthan Yonwood was in my mind and had to be on paper! From that point on, I was hooked on this game where I could pretend to be a character, play out their nuances, whimsy, and sometimes zaniness with a game master who is exceedingly talented. From that experience — the campaign where I created and played Aerthan lasted more than 2 years! — my desire to spread my love of Dungeons and Dragons to everyone I possibly could was born. Aerthan was co-opted to be the “director” of my new idea: live, in-person tables of D&D where youth could join, play, and learn not only about the game but also about themselves!

Meet the Game Master: Curt M.

And this is me, Curt! I am the creator of Aerthan, the man behind the madness. I am a father of two daughters who I’ve worked to get hooked into D&D, and from that journey aim to fill a void in the community. I have played D&D over 5 years now, as well as begun working with other new TTRPGs like Daggerheart and Avatar Legends. For now, I want to get youth the opportunity that I didn’t really have when I was there age: a safe space to explore their interests, with a mentor who can get them started and let them learn and love this hobby that so many others in the last 50 years. Instead of going to the library after school to commandeer all the open computers to rot their brains playing games like Roblox… they can grab a seat at one of my tables and turn on their imagination, entering a new world of endless adventures!

Come up with an idea

Think about what kind of character you want to play: a bookwyrm dragonborn Wizard who has performance anxiety? A Cleric whose deity seems to be more concerned with the tone of the prayers they receive? Maybe a Barbarian who thinks they’re a wizard because they “cast iron” and throw skillets at their foes?

Have a blast exploring!
